Following on from the Water Softener Plant at the rear of the shed I decided to do some work on the groundwork in the area adjacent to the plant.
This area consists of a track accessed via the roundhouse turntable which contains two small loco turntables which are used to gain access to the water softener siding and the old Midland workshop. There were originally 4 of these turntables but numbers 1 and 3 were removed leaving only 2 and 4 in use. [ My numbering from the roundhouse outwards.]
There is also a wheeldrop which has a brick built building with a corrugated roof and a toilet block. The wheeldrop was hydraulically operated lowering driver wheels into a pit before moving the locomotive, raising the driving wheels and rolling them into bay 4 of the workshop where there was a wheel lathe. Access was via a small turntable and the loco turntable.
Photo. Robin Whittle collection.
The van is positioned on the track to the water softener and is immediately opposite one track into the workshop.
The turntable in the foreground gives access - clockwise - to the wheel lathe inside the workshop; two short sidings alongside the boiler house; the stop block buffer and finally the small turntable at the end the the wheel drop track.
Infilling the track and raising the ground level has been achieved by using card and lightweight polycell filler painted with a grey water based paint.

Were locos allowed over the turntables? Wagon ones usually had a 15-20 ton loading. Not axle weight. These are standard Midland loco depot/works ones though. Saw one at Derby at a lower level than the rest of the place and the retaining wall curved around it. It would be somewhere near the present road, behind the old roundhouse. About 15 or more feet diameter. Wagon ones went up to 11 feet. Midland didn't have much longer wheelbases generally.
Ordsall Road (BR(E)), Forge Mill Sidings (BR(M)), Kirkcliffe Coking Plant (BR(E)), Swanage (BR (S)) and Heaby (LMS/MR). Acquired Thorneywood (GNR). Still trying to "Keep the Balance".

Apart from the two missing buildings - Wheel Drop and Toilet block - the scenery at the rear of the roundhouse is more or less finished.
Here are a few photos.

Excellent progress, Robin. More ground clutter and grot to go, I imagine?
